TRACEY MOFFATT

Social Edit

curated by Eric Shiner

Wednesday February 27th - Saturday April 19th
Gallery Hours: Tues - Sat, 12 - 6 pm

Location One is pleased to present Social Edit a suite of three films by Australian video pioneer Tracey Moffatt: Lip (1999), Artist (2000) and Doomed (2007). Each 10-minute loop is spliced together using snippets of Hollywood film to analyze notions of nation, race and class through the fractured lens of cinema and critical theory.

Moffatt utilizes montage to mine the history of Hollywood films, creating short movies that address the horrors of racism, Armageddon and the destruction of things beautiful.  Each work becomes a thought-provoking journey into the collective memory. By exposing moments of subjugation found in these movies, Moffatt allows us to rethink and reposition the implicit meaning of these brief filmic moments. (ES) full press release ...

LOCATION ONE is a not-for-profit organization devoted to convergence between visual, performing and digital arts in a time of rapidly changing technology. We invite artists from different disciplines and from different countries to work in our studios. We ask them to experiment with the new technologies of artistic creation, interaction and delivery. We urge them to collaborate in creating new works and give them virtual Internet spaces and physical gallery space to exhibit the results. Our goals are to foster the creation of new work, new forms of expression, and new capabilities in artists, and to advance new awareness in all those we reach.
